Ofwat Breakthrough Round 4 Winners

We’re thrilled to announce that a new innovation project lead by Anglian Water, ALL Streams HTO, has been successful in winning funding through the Catalyst Stream of Ofwat’s fourth Water Breakthrough Challenge. This project aims to demonstrate Hydrothermal Oxidation’s capability to transform bioresources management in the water sector, bringing about the possibility of several novel circular economy product streams via nutrient and energy recovery, whilst enabling Net Zero, and eliminating land application of biosolids and process emissions.

The project team includes key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, with different perspectives and expertise, from organisations such as Cranfield University, Cetogenix and AtkinsRealis.

We’ll be engaging with customers and stakeholders, particularly around any proposed changes to the practices of spreading operations to land, and we’ll continue to build upon our existing strong relationships with agriculture and food chain stakeholders, as well as directly with household and bioresources recycling customers as part of the delivery of this project and wider Bioresources Strategy.

The potential benefits from this alternative to sludge-to-land process would be felt across our region – for customers, it would provide opportunities to help lower customers’ bills, due to its high potential for revenue generation and reduction in operational costs. For society, renewable energy production would contribute to circular economy and self-sufficiency outcomes, and for the environment HTO would reduce or eliminate agricultural pollution risk, reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions, and finally reduce road transport, therefore cutting back yet again on greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs.

We’re also pleased to share that “No Dig Leak Repair – from Concept to Reality,” a bid funded by Thames Water and supported by Anglian Water, has also been successful. The aim of this funding is to accelerate a revolution in how we fix leaks – minimising road closures, improving service for customers, and lessening the impact on communities.

We’ll be sharing more details as the project progresses, and keeping this website updated with project learnings and research. In the meantime you can take a look at our other Ofwat Innovation funded projects via this link.
